How do I connect to a Windows host?

Solution

To connect to a Windows host one may use "Remote Desktop Connection".
To do so, you need the computer name or the IP address.
Login to Spinup: https://spinup.internal.yale.edu/
Click on the desired resource name
It will take you to a URL similar to this one:
https://spinup.internal.yale.edu/r/spinup-RESOURCE_ID.spinup.yale.edu
On the resource page you should have the host name and IP address listed on the top-center panel.
For Windows:

  1. Open Remote Desktop Connection by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button.
  2. In the search box, type Remote Desktop Connection.
  3. In the list of results, click Remote Desktop Connection.
  4. In the Computer box, type the name or IP of the computer that you want to connect to.
  5. click Connect.
  6. Log in with your NetID.

For Mac:

  1. Download the "Microsoft Remote Desktop" from the App Store: App Store
  2. Open the app and click on "New"
  3. Give the connection a name: e.g.: "Spinup computer 1".
  4. Under PC Name type the full name or IP address.
  5. In the User Name type: yale\YOURNETID
  6. Type your password.
  7. Close the window.
  8. Double click on the entry. Note: The DNS resolution is taking a while to work on the Windows hosts. Once the build has been finished (about 15 minutes), one may connect using the IP address only. After about an hour DNS should start working.
