How Do I Restore a Server Snapshot?

Restoring a snapshot lets you revert a server's disk to a previous state. This can be useful if a configuration becomes corrupted or a file is accidentally deleted. Snapshots are automatically created nightly (the last 14 are retained), and you can also create snapshots on-demand.

When you restore to a snapshot, a new snapshot of the current state is automatically created—so you can revert the restore if needed.

Prerequisites

  • You must have Manage or Update Resources permissions in the Space.

  • The server must be in a stopped state before restoring.

Steps to Restore a Snapshot

  1. Log in to Spinup
Visit https://spinup.internal.yale.edu and sign in with your Yale NetID.

  2. Navigate to the Server
Select the relevant Space, then click on the server you want to restore.

  3. Shut Down the Server
Click the Shut down button on the right-hand side of the server details page. Wait for the server status to change to Stopped.

  4. Locate the Disk and Restore
Each snapshot is tied to an individual disk. Click the Restore button next to the disk you want to revert.

  5. Select a Snapshot
Use the timestamp and description to choose the appropriate snapshot. Click the Restore button next to it, and confirm when prompted.

    • Tip: Snapshots labeled CPM are created automatically each night.

  6. Wait for Restore to Complete
When the spinner next to the disk disappears, the restore is complete.

  7. Power On the Server
Once restore is complete, click Start to power your server back on.

Managing Snapshots

You can delete old or unnecessary snapshots using the red trash can icon next to each snapshot.
