How Do I Resize the Disk of My Spinup Server?

You can increase the size of any disk attached to your Spinup server—up to a maximum of 10 TB per disk. This is useful for expanding available storage without needing to add a new volume.

⚠️ Once a disk is resized, it cannot be reduced in size.
⚠️ Disk resizing is not available for TryIT servers.

Steps to Resize a Disk

  1. Log in to Spinup
Visit https://spinup.internal.yale.edu and sign in with your Yale NetID.

  2. Open Your Server
From your Space, click on the server you want to modify.

  3. Scroll to the Disks Panel
At the bottom of the server view, locate the Disks section. Your root and any additional disks will be listed here.

  4. Resize the Disk

    • Click the gear icon under the “Actions” column next to the disk you want to resize.

    • Enter the new size in gigabytes (must be larger than the current size).

    • Click Save to begin the resize.

After submitting, the new size will appear in the Disks panel within a few minutes.

Operating System Considerations

After resizing your volume, you must manually extend the file system to make use of the additional space. Follow the instructions in the Extend the file system after resizing an Amazon EBS volume - Amazon EBS documentation, selecting the appropriate steps for your operating system.

Additional Notes

  • You must wait at least 6 hours between resizing the same disk again.

  • You cannot shrink a disk once expanded.

  • Disk size changes do not require a reboot.
